What is Reptile or Herpetology Compounding?
Reptile compounding is the practice of preparing customised veterinary medicines specifically for reptiles when commercially available pet medications are unsuitable, unavailable, or cannot be safely dosed for a particular species or condition.
Reptiles vary widely in metabolism, size, behaviour, and physiology, meaning many standard veterinary compounding services intended for mammals such as dogs, cats, birds, or horses may not be appropriate for reptiles.
Through reptile veterinary compounding:
- Custom medicine can be adjusted in strength and customised dosages to meet the unique needs of reptile patients.
- Therapies can be prepared in reptile-appropriate forms, including oral suspensions, transdermal gels, capsules, or injectable formulations.
- Veterinary prescriptions can be fulfilled accurately when veterinarians prescribe specialised antibiotics or combination therapies.
Compounded reptile medications may be used to treat metabolic disorders, shell infections, gastrointestinal disease, respiratory disease, musculoskeletal issues, or behavioural health conditions.
