In every field of medicine, there are some patients who don’t respond to traditional methods of treatment. Sometimes they need medicines that are not available commercially. Sometimes they simply need a different method of ingesting a medication. With a written prescription a compounding pharmacist can and often does address many patient dosing problems by customizing a medication to meet a specific need. McKenzies Chemist is a sub agent for the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) an initiative of the Australian Government. The NDSS delivers diabetes-related products at subsidized prices and provides information and support services to people with diabetes. Registration is open to Australians with diabetes, is free and only needs to be done once. To find out more about NDSS, visit their website at http://www.ndss.com.au.

    Webster Packing

Webster Packing is an accurate and efficient way to package and dispense medication. Webster Packs are designed to make it easy for patients to take their medication by eliminating the confusion when multiple drugs are prescribed. The multi-dose Webster pack is an individually-prepared blister pack which is filled by the pharmacy. It is divided into 28 separate blister wells in four rows of seven, being the doses to be taken at breakfast, lunch, dinner and bedtime on each day of the week. Into each well is loaded the medication prescribed for that time. The patient can quickly identify which dose is next, remove the tablets by pushing them through the foil on the reverse side of the blister pack, and take them without worrying about quantities or mistakes. This simple procedure has the potential to improve compliance significantly. The clear blister packs also act as a visual reminder of which medication is to be taken next and when. Using a special computer program and printer, the pharmacist notes on the pack the names and quantities of the tablets sealed in the blister wells. To find out more about Webster Packing, visit their website at http://www.webstercare.com.au.

    Home Medication Reviews

McKenzies Chemist employs an accredited pharmacist to conduct home medication reviews. A Home Medicines Review (HMR) is a consumer-focused collaborative service used to assist the quality use of medicines. The HMR involves a GP consultation to generate the referral, a pharmacist interview with the patient (preferably in the patient’s home), a clinical assessment by the pharmacist and a written report back to the GP. An HMR will provide GPs with comprehensive, up-to-date information about the medicines, complementary products, over-the-counter medicines, devices and other prescriptions being used by their patient.

Patients will receive assistance with medications, aids and devices to improve compliance, and early detection and management of medicine-related problems. To find out more about HMRs please call one any one of our pharmacists on 9271 6870.
